A Brimbank warehouse is on the cards for bulk food giant Costco.

Costco has lodged a development application with Brimbank council, which is currently open for public submissions.

Brimbank city development director Kelvin Walsh said the company lodged an application in May to build a warehouse at 740 Ballarat Road, Ardeer.

“[The application is] for a restricted retail premises, construction of a service station and associated works, display of business identification signage and access alterations to Ballarat Road,” Mr Walsh said.

“Council understands that the occupier of the proposed development (if approved) would be Costco.”

The project is estimated to cost $62.8 million and is designed to span across 14.68 acres which includes the store plan, service station, tyre centre, 20 bicycle spaces and 745 car parks.

The proposed design is similar in style to existing Costco stores across Australia, with the store to be set out on one level.

Once complete, the store will be open seven days a week, from 8.30am to 8.30pm Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 6.30pm on Saturday and will be open 10am to 6pm on Sundays.

The service station is set to include 18 bowsers and an accompanying building to include a point of sales system.

“Once the public notification period has concluded, council officers will undertake a detailed assessment of the application, including considering any submissions received and all relevant decision guidelines within the Brimbank Planning Scheme,” Mr Walsh said.

Public comment across social media has been for the most part positive.

Brimbank resident Kristy Spiteri is excited at the prospect of the new addition.

“I think it is great for the community and closer proximity for people who live in the western suburbs. It will create more local jobs and with the general living expenses increasing, it will create choice for consumers,” she said.
