Sunshine North Primary School’s Michelle McCabe is hoping to sell all 200 copies of the school’s recipe book before the year’s end.
Since its first run in May last year, 150 copies have sold and, with just one term left, Ms McCabe is hopeful she can convince 50 more school parents and relatives to part with $20 for their own copy.
“Everybody who buys it loves it,” the kitchen garden teacher says. “Sunbury Rotary Club loved it so much they bought a copy for every school in the district.”
The book features 68 recipes, which have all been tried and tested by pupils, as well as garden tips for the home, and cooking and gardening advice.
All proceeds from its sales go straight back into the school’s kitchen garden program, which has been running for nine years.
The Sunshine North primary school was one of the first 10 to be part of celebrated Australian chef Stephanie Alexander’s not-for-profit kitchen garden foundation.
The initiative introduces fun food growing and preparation education to children during their learning years in order to form positive food habits for life.
Each fortnight, pupils visit the garden to harvest produce before cooking up the spoils in the kitchen.
People can buy a copy of Sunshine North’s home garden cookbook at the school, 65-71 Suffolk Road, North Sunshine, or call 9311 2400.
