A Sydenham school’s award-winning ‘greens’ garden is set to expand – with fruit production, poultry raising and pizza making now on the menu.
Catholic Regional College was recently named secondary school of the year for its community leadership at the ninth annual 2016 ResourceSmart Schools Awards for its Arthur Street community garden project.
Described as a “living, breathing enterprise”, the community garden has been producing greens, from cabbages, coriander and broccoli to broad beans, for the past two years, with all vegies donated weekly to the local Loaves and Fishes Food Bank at St Albans.
The school also presented a $2500 cheque to the food bank’s co-ordinator Charlie. The funds were all raised by students during the schools’s McAuley awards, which recognise students who live the school’s values and have a strong sense of community.
“Our student leaders organised many events during the year to raise money for food bank,” school liaison officer Laura Cioccia said.
“A large amount of money raised was through the sale of fresh produce from the garden.
“Soon we’ll be planting some fruit trees, putting in a pizza oven, and getting in some chickens, the housing for which will be designed and built by the wood tech students.”
She said the project allows students to get a better perspective about what it means to be a “citizen of the planet”.
