Cool keys for St Albans

Tadros and musician Grant Cameron play the colourful piano in Alfrieda Street St Albans.

Brimbank artist Tadros Hanna is bringing a splash of colour and music to St Albans.

A piano decorated by Hanna that featured in the Melbourne Arts Centre’s Play Me, I’m Yours exhibition is sitting proudly, and in public, in St Albans.

The exhibition put more than 20 hi-viz pianos on Melbourne streets for the public to play. Hanna’s creation was placed in Goldsborough Lane.

“When the exhibition finished I got in contact with the council to see if I could bring the piano to Brimbank,” he said.

“I’d always wanted to place it where I live and create my artwork and it’s wonderful to see it placed at Alfrieda Square.”

With the piano settled in its new home, Hanna said it was amazing to see the community inspired by music.

“The first day it was placed in St Albans, I went down to have a look and there was already someone playing it,” he said.

“It’s a wonderful thing to see people communicating through art and music.”

He admitted he had initial concerns about vandalism, but says he quickly overcame them.

“I was concerned about it being ruined,” he said. “But the moment I saw someone playing it, I realised that it’s not about the piano – it’s about art and bringing people together.

“There’s always pianos – if something happens to it, I’ll just put a new one there.”
