RSPCA Victoria, Victoria Police and Brimbank council have joined forces to rescue more than 100 birds alleged to have been part of a cockfighting ring.

The roosters, hens and chicks were last month removed from two properties.

While the warrants to secure the birds were executed successfully, the RSPCA said about half had been mutilated and then trained to fight one another wearing spurs.

RSPCA Victoria inspectorate acting head Lisa Calleja said those involved in the successful operation were pleased with the outcome, but disappointed that cockfighting was still happening in Victoria.

“We’re saddened to report that cockfighting is still happening in the community,” she said. “This week, our inspectors secured the surrender of more than 100 roosters, hens and chicks, approximately half of which had allegedly been trained to fight one another in illegal cockfighting activities.

“Cockfighting is not a sport – it is barbaric and highly illegal.

“Those participating will be held accountable.”

The investigation is ongoing.
