Women’s participation in sport is on the rise, but some facilities in Brimbank are struggling to keep up with the demand.
Albion Football Club under-18 girls’ coach Ryan Blake said that the lack of adequate facilities has become a major issue for his club.
“We’re one of the few clubs that has girls’ sides in this area of Brimbank, but we just don’t have the facilities for them,” he said.
“We have the one changeroom with
open showers and only one pan toilet. We’re actually having to clear out the rooms multiple times a day because we have male games on before and after the women and there’s just no privacy.
“We even had occasions last year where it was particularly muddy and we couldn’t really offer them a shower.
“It’s becoming more and more difficult to retain these girls when we can’t give them the proper facilities they deserve.”
Club administrator Chantelle Hyett said the club was looking to grow it’s female participation and would welcome new facilities.
And it looks like relief could be in
sight.
Last week Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said a proposed $300 million revamp of Etihad Stadium would be scrapped and the money invested into grassroots sport.
Mr Blake welcomed the announcement.
“We actually had an audit carried out on the facilities a few years ago and the result from that were quite dire,” he said.
