Close shave booked in

The warmer weather can’t come quickly enough for a group of staff at Victoria University Secondary College, after they shaved their heads for charity last week.

The Kings Park school combined annual Book Week activities with a World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser for the Leukemia Foundation, hoping to raise more than $2000 in the process.

Acting principal Sue Atzarakis said the day brought together several aspects of their school and what they stand for.

“I think days like this really reflect our values as a school,” Ms Atzarakis said.

“One of our values is strength in the community, and also aspiring to achieve, so combining some of the fun of book week and the literacy outcomes of that with some fundraising for an important cause really tied in nicely.

“We’ve been fundraising for this for a while, and with raffles on the day and a gold coin donation we’re hopeful we can raise a bit.”

Ms Atzarakis said the school placed a high value on reading and the focus on it last week showed how important that is.

“We know that students who read more achieve greater results at school, and it’s great to see the students dressed up as characters from their favourite books at this time every year.”

College board president Ellen Arnott joined three staff members in shaving their heads at lunchtime on August 24.
