Civic centre name stoush

With its grand opening just a month away, Sunshine’s new $52m community and civic centre is still without an official name.

Brimbank council first floated Brimbank House as a potential title for the Hampshire Road building back in April, which is set to open on July 25.

However community feedback slammed the name as “misleading” , “boring”, “old fashioned and daggy” and sounded like a “halfway house or somewhere to seek refuge”.

“It sounds like some sort of rehabilitation place,” one resident complained.

“It does not look like a house at all.”

Other options thrown up were Harvester House, Harvester Civic Centre, Harvester Centre, The Brimbank Centre and Housey McHouseface.

The latter did not comply with the council’s guidelines.

The council will vote on Tuesday night, June 21, on whether it applies to the Registrar of Geographic Names to approve the much more conservative moniker, the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.
