Chicago hits the stage

Students from Keilor Downs College (KDC) are jazzing into the roaring 1920s’ with a teen production of Chicago The Musical.

With a cast of about 45 students from year 7 to year 12, the show will launch on Wednesday, July 19.

Cast member Mikki, who plays the role of Kitty Baxter, said working collaboratively on the group project has been one of the greatest highlights during the production journey.

“It’s allowed us to foster new connections with each other and develop these strong bonds with other students both old and new, which is really what KDC is about … community,” she said.

Kayla, who plays Mary Sunshine, said the cast has been rehearsing for almost six months, working tirelessly to pull the musical together.

“… We all started this musical not knowing each other very well … so we’ve all had to not only work on the production side of the musical but also the social side of it which is a huge aspect of a great musical,” she said.

“Knowing that it’s less than a month away is bittersweet, we all want to showcase our work but we also don’t want it all to end.”

Lilly, who plays Velma Kelly, said the show is incredibly upbeat and will feature fan-favourite renditions of known toe-tapping songs including ‘All that Jazz’ and ‘Mister Cellophane.’

“To all audience members, you can certainly expect to be transported into the jazzy and corrupted times of the 1920’s. From the clubs to the prisons, to celebrities and ultimate freedom,” she said.
