St George Preca Primary School pupils celebrated Book Week recently with a costume parade dressed as their favourite book characters and plenty of reading.

Literacy leaders and teachers Kathy Zakic and Bianca Terranova said Book Week served an importance purpose at the school.

“To instill a love of reading with the children,” Ms Zakic said.

“We want children to want to read.”

Ms Zakic said the school’s theme “Dreaming With Eyes Open” centred around awareness and respect of indigenous Australians .

“Catholic schools do a lot of Welcome to Country,” she said.

Ms Zakic said in line with the indigenous theme, children at the Caroline Springs school were encouraged to read books about the first Australians.

A highlight of the week was all 670 pupils at the Lancefield Drive school dressing as their favourite book characters for a parade in front of parents and staff.

Other book-related activities throughout the week included pupils creating colourful art, responding to text and telling stories to highlight the importance of reading.

Teachers also dressed up as their favourite book characters.
