The Sunshine Salvation Army is celebrating 100 years of serving the community.
The Sunshine branch was established in 1920 and officer Colin Reynolds said while the organisation has long been a pillar of the community, there’s been many ups and downs.
“One significant part of our history is when our old building in Clarke Street was burned down by arsonists in the ’70s,” he said.
“Thankfully we were able to move into our current premises on Devonshire Road relatively quickly.”
He said the Salvos now have several “arms” of service in Sunshine including the housing service, the op shop, the employment service, the chaplain and aged care.
To mark the centenary the Salvos are holding a family light entertainment night on Saturday, February 15.
“It’ll be a fun night full of costumes, karaoke, trivia and a whole heap of fun,” Mr Reynolds said.
The event will be held at the Salvation Army’s Sunshine office, 42 Devonshire Road, from 7-9pm.
The following morning a service will be held at the office to officially mark the centenary.
“Everyone is welcome to come to both events and no bookings are required,” Mr Reynolds said.
The service will run from 10-11.30am and will be followed by a lunch.
