Celebrating Landcare week

Brimbank locals who dedicate their time to protect, enhance and restore the natural environment were celebrated as part of Landcare week last week.

Running from August 4 to 10, the annual campaign acknowledges the individuals, community groups and organisations committed to Landcare through conservation land management, environmental education, volunteer work, science and research innovation and other initiatives.

President of Friends of Kororoit Creek (FOKC) Jessica Gerger said Landcare week is a great opportunity to recognise and support hardworking friend groups.

“Landcare volunteers give time, love, passion and blood, sweat and tears all for the love of their local environment and community. Celebrating and recognising volunteer achievements goes a long way in keeping up spirits and energy,” Ms Gerger said.

Throughout the year the FOKC hosts a range of events to combat the negative environmental effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and deforestation.

These events include planting days, group working bees, litter pick-ups, educational workshops and the maintenance of natural sites, among other activities.

“The FOKC is proud of our planting sites along the creek that showcase rich, multi-layered vegetation, loads of wildlife, artworks like Walan-walan, play areas, signage and habitat features. We hope that we have helped to create a vibrant community around the creek — a community that also includes everything from the microbes in the soil, the wonderful plants, fungi and animals to the creek itself,” Ms Gerger said.

“We can see the improvement in the landscape from our efforts — the increase in wildlife, the beauty and biodiversity.”
