The Friends of Kororoit Creek (FOKC) are encouraging locals to get their hands dirty and join in a community working bee for National Tree Day.
The team of green thumbs will be working at the Bug Rug, a local spot just off of the Kororoit Creek trail in Sunshine West to mark the national day.
President of FOKC Jessica Gerger said the group is planning to plant scattered trees along with lots of shrubs, wildflowers and grasses, all of which are vital for biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
“It’s brilliant to see everybody out there working toward a common goal for the betterment of our local environment,” she said.
“It’s a very social day and everyone is happy to be thereout in nature surrounded by birds. It’s a beautiful day and lots of fun.”
Ms Gerger said she is expecting many people in the community to head down on the day and help beautify the local landscape.
“Everyone is invited to come down and join us. It is easy to get involved and there is something for everyone, whether it be helping to mix water crystals, planting shrubs or filling up water buckets, there will be activities for all ages and abilities,” she said.
Established in 1996, National Tree Day has led to 26 million trees planted Australia wide by over five million volunteers since its formation.
FOKC will host their National Tree Day working bee on Saturday, July 30, from 10am-1pm at The Bug Rug located at 59 Sanders Avenue, Sunshine West.
