Albion may not readily come to mind as a place to find fishing hotspots, but the Sunshine Fly Casting Club has been calling the suburb home for more than 50 years.

With more than 60 members, the club is one of the oldest of its kind in Australia – and is hoping to hook new members with a come-and-try night on Tuesday, March 26.

Club president Ted Bown said the night would be an opportunity for anyone who’s ever wanted to have a crack at the sport to get an introduction to the equipment, techniques and the club.

“We want people to come along on the night, have a bit of a try with the rods on the grass, and then we’ll go inside for the meeting and start tying some flies,” Mr Bown said.

“A lot of people have tried it, but are scared of it – they’re the people we want to get in, because once you know how to do it all properly it’s great fun.

“I started at the club doing exactly that – just popped in for a look and I’ve been here ever since.”

With fly fishing spots few and far between in Brimbank, the club practices on the lawns near Barclay Reserve, Albion, casting lines to targets on the grass to get their techniques sound before embarking on fishing trips.

The club’s come-and-try night will run from 5.30pm at Barclay Reserve.
