Car accidents rife in Brimbank

More cars were involved in accidents in Brimbank last year than in any other Melbourne local government area outside of the CBD, an insurance provider’s figures suggest.

The data shows that more than 4000 accidents were the subject of RACV insurance claims in Brimbank last year. The company’s top three bingle spots in the state were Melbourne, with 4885 claims, followed by Brimbank (4163) and then Monash (3482).

The company handled almost four times as many car accidents in Brimbank than in any other local government area in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

But the area’s driver misfortune on the roads was only marginally worse last year than in 2014, with just two extra accidents as reported to RACV.

RACV general manager of insurance Paul Northey said Fridays between noon and 6pm was the period in which accidents were most likely to happen.

And there had been a noticeable spike in the number of car accidents in May in the past five years.

Mr Northey said that since 2010, nine per cent of RACV car accident insurance claims were in relation to accidents in the last month of autumn.

He cautioned drivers to be prepared for unexpected situations and to keep a safe distance between the car ahead, regardless of the relevant speed limit.

“It is important to anticipate the actions of other motorists and be prepared for any unexpected situations,” he said.

Mr Northey said the average cost of RACV car collision claims last year was $5000, with 11 per cent of all claims for the total loss of a car and 64 per cent for repairs.

RACV insurance claims data shows there were 1098 car collision claims in Moreland, 1025 in Maribrynong and 855 in Melton.

There were 839 collisions in Hobsons Bay, 821 in Moonee Valley and 99 in Wyndham.
