Candidates wait on election results

2710Election

By Esther Lauaki

Brimbank has voted and is awaiting the results of its council election.

Newly elected councillors will be announced within coming weeks as the last of the postal votes stream in to be counted.

Brimbank attracted a field of 51 candidates this year – 18 fewer candidates since the last election in 2016 when the embattled council emerged from seven years under administration.

The Grasslands ward had 17 nominations, down one from the last election, while there were 11 nominations for three vacancies in the Harvester ward this year – down from 19 candidates in 2016.

Incumbent Brimbank councillors Victoria Borg, Duyen Anh Pham and Janev Aziz all stood again in the Grasslands ward.

Deputy mayor Kin Thien Truong and fellow incumbent councillor Sam David ran again in the Harvester ward while John Hedditch bowed out due to health concerns.

Horseshoe Bend ward had 10 nominations and there are 17 nominations for Taylors ward with incumbent Brimbank councillors Virginia Tachos, Bruce Lancashire and Margaret Giudice and mayor Georgina Papafotiou all running again.

Daniel Allan stepped down from council, representing Horseshoe Bend ward, to focus on family.

Candidates last weekend flooded social media thanking all their supporters.

Horseshoe Bend ward candidate Jenny Isa thanked her fellow candidates.

“Your love of community continues to inspire me in so many ways,” Ms Isa wrote in a post.

“This year’s council elections have had many ups and downs, but I draw on the positive relationships and experiences that I have formed.

“The Brimbank community deserves nothing but passionate, community-minded councillors that place residents first at the forefront of change, along with the relentless pursuit of integrity and transparency.”
