New data revealed shows social housing register applicants have increased 3.14 per cent across the state, including the Western region, from September to December 2021.

Brimbank recorded an increase of 124 from 4,073 to 4,197.

Western Victoria MP Stuart Grimley said the new figures indicated the need for a housing summit.

“These social housing numbers are quite scary,” Ms Grimley said.

“It means more and more people are being pushed to homelessness or housing insecurity.

Grimley also said it was a worry that the numbers would be likely to increase and called for the government to do more on the issue.

“We do think it’s a good opportunity for the Government to consult with the broader community, including small rural towns, to find solutions to this problem,” he said.
