St Paul’s pupils answer call of the wild

Four students from St Paul’s Primary School at Sunshine West have answered the call to help one of the planet’s most endangered species.

Grade six pupils Jane Nguyen, Abbey Simpson, Katie Nguyen and Charlotte Vella (pictured) vowed last year to help recycle old mobile phones to support primate conservation, as part of phone recycling campaign They’re Calling On You.

The girls were inspired by Werribee Open Range Zoo’s program Endangered Race.

They collected 28 mobile phones, which helped raise money for the Gorilla Doctors, an international team of vets working to save gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda.

One of the biggest threats to wild primates is the illegal mining of coltan, a mineral used in mobile phones that is found in gorilla habitats. Details: www.zoo.org/callingonyou or www.gorilladoctors.org
