Crime, murder mystery and the world’s worst detective aren’t usually topics associated with children’s literature, however that’s exactly what you’ll find in the sixth edition of Early Harvest.
The annual literary magazine created by children for children will be launched by 13 young editors and children’s author Maxine Beneba Clarke this Saturday at St Albans’ Bowery Theatre as part of the Brimbank Writers’ Festival.
Children’s book author Davina Bell mentored the editors and contributed a story to the magazine. She said the project is a real rarity in the publishing industry.
“It’s an absolute joy to be involved in something like this,” she said.
“Given the nature of the publishing industry, projects like Early Harvest are quite rare.”
The Early Harvest program brings together a group of children from diverse backgrounds and mentors them to edit and publish a literary magazine for young readers.
“Some children might not come from a literary or book background because of migration and other factors and this project allows them to see how stories are crafted and to collaborate as part of a team,” Ms Bell said.
The Brimbank Writers Festival runs from November 9-18. The young editors will launch the publication on Saturday, November 11.
