Brotherhood gets NDIS nod

Brimbank has received its highly sought after NDIS local area coordinator (LAC).

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) last week announced the Brotherhood of St Laurence will deliver services in the Western Melbourne region from Carlton to Little River, and across the Brimbank and Melton region, from Sunshine to Melton.

Local area coordination supports the implementation of the NDIS at a local community level, however a LAC had yet to be appointed to Brimbank.

Last month Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou raised a number of concerns about the assessment process for accessing the NDIS in federal Parliament and said an LAC was required.

Brotherhood LAC manager Daniel Leighton said the announcement is significant for people with disability, their families and their carers living in the west. “Delivering Local Area Coordination speaks to the Brotherhood’s vision of connecting with and engaging in community,” he said.

“In addition to supporting people with disability to access the NDIS, the Brotherhood will work in partnership with local councils and community groups to identify opportunities.”

The NDIS will become available in the Western Melbourne and Brimbank Melton regions from October 1, 2018, with LAC offices to open across Melbourne’s west.
