Fire investigators have not been able to find a cause of the Brooklyn scrap metal recycling plant fire on Monday night which took ten hours to extinguish.
A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said the pile of scrap metal was completely dismantled using heavy machinery to allow more than 100 firefighters to fight the blaze.
“As a result, the scene was too badly disturbed to enable Fire Investigators to determine a cause,” she said.
An Environment Protection Authority inspection at the Sims Metal on Tuesday revealed the fire occurred in steel stockpiles of mostly wrecked vehicles.
Residents within a one kilometre radius of the fire were told to stay inside, shut doors and windows and turn off their air conditioners.
In a statement, the EPA said it found no “further offsite contamination of the environment” following the fire.
All vehicles burnt in the fire will still be recycled.
