Brimbank tackles emissions

Brimbank council says its efforts to address climate change over the past five years have resulted in a 78 per cent reduction of operational greenhouse gas emissions.

The Brimbank Climate Emergency plan 2020-2025 was presented at the council meeting on June 17.

The plan highlights many achievements that have slashed emissions such as LED street lights, solar panels on council buildings, the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity in council buildings and Australia’s first 100 per cent renewable energy aquatic centre.

Brimbank mayor Thuy Dang said these actions showed commitment to taking local action on the climate emergency.

“People in Brimbank are already feeling the effects of climate change, especially through heatwaves and pollution,” she said.

“Through our actions, both big and small, we are responding to our communities’ concerns and making inroads on climate change.

“We must all play our part in protecting the planet for our community and future generations.”

While current results are strong, reaching Brimbank’s net-zero emissions by 2030 target for council operations, will require great innovation and effort.

Brimbank’s key priorities are transitioning the remaining 38 council facilities that use gas for some appliances to electricity and converting their vehicle fleet to electric.

Brimbank also aims to support the community and businesses to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Which will form part of the new Climate Emergency Strategy.
