Park starved for food service

Brimbank Park is still without a cafe.

Almost three months since the Brownstone Cafe closed its doors late
last year, one of the municipality’s biggest tourism assets is without a food or drink outlet.

Following the cafe’s closure, Parks Victoria Keilor Plains area chief ranger David Collins said a new tenant would be found as soon as possible and short-term agreements for mobile food vendors initiated.

However, nothing has eventuated. Despite the delay, Parks Victoria

director commercial partnerships Caroline Stanners last week said the search for new tenants continues.

“Parks Victoria is committed to ensuring a new tenant is secured and food and beverage services are returned to the park as soon as possible,” Ms Stanners said.

“Parks Victoria needs to ensure the process for securing a new lease holder at Brimbank Park is fair and equitable and will be advertising an expression of interest in line with government policy.”

Applications for mobile traders also remain open.

“Parks Victoria recently released an invitation for application to local mobile traders for the opportunity to provide their services at Brimbank Park,” Ms Stanners added.

“Anyone interested in the opportunity to provide mobile food services at Brimbank Park can contact Parks Victoria at mobiletrading@parks.vic.gov.au for more information.”

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said recent upgrades to the park have attracted more visitors and the return of food and beverage services would be welcomed.

“Brimbank council was pleased to be involved with a recent … study, which showed more people were using the park as a result of playground improvements,” Cr Giudice said.

“The cafe in the visitor centre added an additional attraction to Brimbank Park, and council would welcome the return of this service.

“Investment by Parks Victoria into Brimbank Park is important to maintain this wonderful natural asset.”
