Brimbank council has opened its first men’s shed at Westvale Community Centre, welcoming new participants last Tuesday.
Construction of the council-owned and managed men’s space finished last month, aided by $42,000 from the state government and $30,000 from the council.
Brimbank mayor John Hedditch said the shed will offer specific services and support for men, and a special place for them to talk and learn from each other.
“What’s great about the men’s shed model is its unique ability to influence the social-determinants of health – those social, economic and material factors that shape individual and community health – for one of the hardest-to-reach groups in our society,” Cr Hedditch said.
“Westvale men’s shed will provide a place to go, to learn and interact with others, and in time, a place to catch up with mates.
“[It] will deliver men’s-focused, inclusive programs and activities, responsive to the needs of men in the community,” he said.
The men’s shed will offer a range of programs and services, with carpentry, gardening, DIY, cooking, sustainable living, and life skills to support independent living among many others.
At its official opening, Victoria’s Minister for Families and Children, Jenny Mikakos, said the social benefits of men’s sheds make them an invaluable community resource.
“Men’s sheds are extremely valuable for community-building work, as well as helping with men’s mental and physical health and wellbeing,” Ms Mikakos said.
Brimbank council will manage the men’s shed, with support from the Westvale Community Centre’s community-led advisory group.
