Brimbank has a new, junior force doing its bit to help the city’s homeless keep warm.
Community-minded Sydenham Hillside Primary School children have been collecting blankets, scarves, jumpers, beanies and gloves for donation to those in need via the helping hands of a Sydenham church and the Salvation Army.
The idea emerged after eight students attended the social justice conference Kids View and heard about the value of making a positive difference in the lives of others doing it tough.
Teacher Luke O’Sullivan said the students had since turned inspiration into action.
“The kids have run a stall in the school’s courtyard,” he said. “We’ve taken a student from each grade 5 and 6 class to be involved.
“The clothes will then be given to the homeless of Melbourne in the CBD.”
Sydenham Hillside Primary School has form when it comes to giving.
Students raised nearly $1000 two years ago when the school sold items such as pencil cases, necklaces and bags that were hand-made by street kids in the Philippines.
All money raised went back to children’s rights organisation Bahay Tuluyan Philippines Australia, supporting children living in poverty.
