Two historical Brimbank sites are in line to receive heritage overlay.
The Brimbank council will seek authorisation from the minister for planning to apply an overlay to a half house at 108 George Street, St Albans and the Grand Junction Estate and Environs Precinct in Sunshine.
Cr Virginia Tachos said the move was an important way to preserve local history.
“I fully endorse the heritage overlay on the last known surviving half house at 108 George Street, St Albans,” she said.
“The house is a historical reminder
of the beginnings of immigration
where people arrived in St Albans in the 1950s.
“It was essentially a tiny bungalow that was expected to be expanded into what we see today as a fully fledged house once the economic circumstances improved and serves as a tangible reminder of our simple and humble beginnings.”
The council will also apply to rezone parts of the precinct from a residential growth zone to a neighbourhood residential zone.
Cr Bruce Lancashire said the rezoning was an important move.
“This is about giving these people in the area some heritage protection and of course the change of residential zone is an essential part of it,” he said.
