Brimbank council’s part in a reconciliation walk to the MCG at last year’s Boxing Day test match was recognised last week with a HART Award.
The HART (Helping Achieve Reconciliation Together) awards are presented by Reconciliation Victoria.Brimbank’s work with 10 other councils and the Mullagh Wills Foundation on the ‘Journey to the G’ project won one of the three awards presented.
The Journey to the G celebrated the 150th anniversary of the 1866 Boxing Day match between the MCC and the All Aboriginal Cricket Team, with the walk beginning in Harrow in western Victoria and concluding at the MCG on Boxing Day, 2016. It mirrored the walk taken by the Aboriginal team in 1866.
“The manner in which each of the municipalities embraced this project and helped tell the story of the Aboriginal Cricket Team’s journey to Melbourne has been wonderful,” said Mullagh Wills Foundation chair Jane Nathan.
“To have the support of the Melbourne Cricket Club on Boxing Day at the sacred Scar Tree in Yarra Park helped complete this journey and provide further focus on this story,” she said.
A welcome to country ceremony on day one of last year’s Test match concluded the walk, as well as a ceremony at the Scar Tree in Yarra Park, a sacred site for indigenous people.
