Brimbank council urges Melton line upgrade

The “antiquated” train line between Sunshine and Melton must be duplicated and electrified “sooner rather than later”, Brimbank council says.

Plans are in place for six councils, including Brimbank, to combine for a “regional alliance” to lobby for an electrified rail line.

The Ballarat Rail-Line Action Committee would see mayors from Melton, Moorabool, Brimbank, Ararat, Ballarat and Pyrenees councils meet four times a year to work on campaign strategies.

A working group, made up of chief executive officers supporting the committee, would also meet monthly.

The existing line from Sunshine to Melton is only serviced by a single track, V/Line diesel rail service.

Signing up to the BRLAC, Chair of Administrators John Watson said the “antiquated rail system” needed to be upgraded soon.

“It needs to be done sooner rather than later,” he said.

Improvements would best serve residents in Ardeer, Deer Park and Derrimut, the council says.
