Brimbank council overturns tin rattling ban

A Keilor community group is free to fundraise on busy street corners for the Good Friday Appeal after Brimbank council overturned a ban on tin rattling.

Lyn Pickering, secretary of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria’s western branch, said the club was thrilled with the news.

Star Weekly revealed last week the club had been a major player in raising $545,624.65 over the past 32 years before the council ban following safety concerns.

“We’re ecstatic,” she said this morning. “We’re really pleased.”

The club will return to several profitable locations in Brimbank including the intersections of Keilor Park Drive and the Calder Freeway; Ballarat and Station roads; and Ballarat, Anderson and McIntyre roads.

The council said it put the ban in place following advice from Victoria Police and VicRoads.

However Director City Development Stuart Menzies said today it would now work with the club to ensure it continued to collect safely.

“Council will be granting a local permit to make it clear that collections can take place on council managed roadsides and other land,” he said.

“This permit will be to the Good Friday Appeal, the organisation running the appeal, and cover any of its group members and volunteers.

“Collectors, pedestrians and motorists should take care on the day.”
