Brimbank council is joining individuals and organisations around the world calling for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls as they take part in the ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign.

The campaign runs from November 25 until December 10 and helps raise awareness of how gender-based violence is rooted in inequality and discrimination.

The council said on its website that it encourages everyone to play their part to reduce gender inequalities and take action to prevent violence before it starts.

“One key driver of gender-based violence is based on the belief and support for outdated gender stereotypes, particularly ideas of what it means to be a man.

“We’d like to challenge these stereotypes and mindsets that contribute to family violence. We can think about and talk about what respect looks like, particularly in relationships, families, workplaces, and communities.

And we can call out disrespect, sexism, harassment, and abuse when it is safe to do so.”

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic or family violence, help is available.
