The State Emergency Service received hundreds of call-outs to incidents in Brimbank on Sunday as wind gusts crept up to almost 100km/h.
The strong winds lifted a jumping castle off the ground in Sunshine at 1.42pm yesterday at a public event and struck a man in his 40s who suffered neck injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman told Star Weekly.
An SES spokesman said Emerald, Brimbank, Ballarat and Broadmeadows were the most severely affected regions in the state.
Brimbank SES unit deputy controller Brad Dalgleish said 211 requests for assistance had been received since about midday on Sunday.
“A significant number of trees have fallen on cars and houses,” he said. “And there’s still more calls coming through.”
He said Brimbank’s south west was the worst hit, particularly Deer Park and Sunshine.
Power was also lost for more than 5000 homes and businesses in the Sunshine area yesterday. A power line came down onto the train lines in Albion around midday, killing electricity for approximately 1000 properties, with power finally being resorted last night.
Electricity was also lost for approximately 4000 homes and businesses just after 2pm on Sunday when trees fell onto a power line on St Albans Road near the Fun City Entertainment Complex.
A Powercor spokeswoman said “small pockets” of homes are still waiting for their power to be restored in this area. “We’re hoping to have power restored to 100-200 homes by 6pm tonight,” she said.
An SES spokesman said 2100 trees and 365 power lines were down across the state, and that 4000 requests for assistance had been received since 7am on Sunday.
Wind gusts were recorded just before midday on Sunday at Melbourne Airport of 107 km/h.
