Bricklayer jailed for storing drugs

A St Albans bricklayer has been jailed for seven years for his role in importing more than three kilograms of drugs into the country inside two suitcases.

Hadi Kazemi pleaded guilty to the importation of a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug. He was involved in a “joint enterprise” importing two consignments of methamphetamine from Armenia via contacts in Iran between October 10 and December 20, 2014.

A County Court sentencing hearing on April 14 heard the 26-year-old’s main role was to provide a “safe” address in Sunshine for delivery of the drugs.

About 3.3 kilograms of pure methamphetamine was found inside two suitcases filled with clothing and shoes. The drugs had an estimated street value of more than $4 million.

Kazemi admitted he was to receive $10,000 for his role in the operation.

“Kazemi … took active steps to secure a safe address,” judge Irene Lawson said.

“Kazemi’s role can be characterised as akin to a mere courier but at the highest level of that sort of role.”

He will be eligible for parole in four years.
