Braybrook Community Hub’s first birthday will be celebrated in style this week with a series of fun events.

Residents have been making the most of the $12.5 million hub, which include Braybrook’s first library, a new sports pavilion, learning centre and early-years centres, as well as health and support services delivered by cohealth.

Community worker Nafisa Idris said it had been a joy to work at the hub and help people in the Braybrook community.

“We help kids from non-English speaking backgrounds who have come as refugees,” she said.

“Through volunteers, we assist them with homework or set English or maths work for them. On Thursday mornings, we have a multicultural playgroup – mums come down with their kids, we do storytime and songs to help improve English.”

Ms Idris said the sessions are a way to link people with further services they may need such as maternal health.

“The mums here locally, they are very isolated,” she said

“I came as a refugee myself and I know how parents struggle. I came in 1994 from Eritrea.”

Birthday celebrations, to be held at the hub from March 19 to 24, include men’s shed demonstrations, play time, movie screenings, free yoga and bilingual storytime.

All events and activities are free.
