After a lifetime in music, and 11 years working on his solo project, West Sunshine artist Peter Nigido is ready to release his new EP.
Nigido, 35, has previously played in bands that have supported prominent artists such as The Temper Trap, but it is his move to his solo project and the chance to put his own personal touch on his art that is exciting him now.
“For years I was drumming in bands, and writing where I could,” he said.
“I’ve always steered towards alternative music and had electronic music around me, so that’s where I’m coming from with my music,” he said.
“I recorded a few of my own tracks, but it took me a long time to get the confidence to release my music under my own name.
“It’s not too self-indulgent I don’t think, so hopefully people will listen to it and come up with their own interpretations of what it is about.”
His first release, Holding Hands with the Sun, reached No.1 on the Triple J Unearthed electronic charts, stayed in the top 10 for six weeks, and the video was also played on Rage during their 25th anniversary celebrations.
Nigido said the success of that release was a real thrill.
“It was awesome,” he said. “The project being dark and alternative, I didn’t know how people were going to take to it, but the feedback has been really positive.”
While recording the new EP, The Art of Turning a Page, Nigido became a father.
“That’s probably part of the reason it’s taken so long, but it’s also brought some new themes into the music which I really like,” he said.
“Basically, it’s about moving forward, new chapters of life and all that, but the music still has that alternative edge.”
