Big issues are at play

Ave Maui and Raven Okello, both 11, are preparing for their most challenging roles yet.

Two St Albans actors are preparing to take on their most challenging roles.

Ave Maui and Raven Okello, both 11, will next month appear in Lone at the North Melbourne Town Hall.

They are part of a cast of 11 children between the ages of eight and 11.

The show places issues such as safety, privacy, authority and the adult gaze under thoughtful investigation.

Raven said being part of the big cast was the best part of the experience.

“Being part of something that has so many other people involved has been really great,” she said. “It’s been fun getting to know everyone and making some new friends.”

While both girls have acting experience, Ave said this role had been a challenge.

“It’s been a mix of excitement and nerves leading up to this,” she said. “I think when it comes time to perform, I’ll just be excited. We’ve been rehearsing twice a week so we’ve put a lot of time and effort into this.”

Ave said they both fell in love with acting during some school workshops and plan to continue performing.

“At school they had workshops and classes, which looked like a lot of fun, so we joined and have really enjoyed it,” she said.

Lone will premiere on Friday, June 8, and run until Sunday, June 17.

“We want everyone to come to North Melbourne and see our show,” Raven said.
