Sunshine Baseball Club is teaming up with its western suburbs counterparts to fight the tyranny of distance this winter.
With junior players in the area previously having to travel to the other side of the city for games during winter, a group of clubs are forming the Western District Winter League, and the hunt for players is on.
Sunshine Baseball junior co-ordinator Glenn Letts said the desire to play more games locally and keep juniors playing was behind the move to start their own league.
“Last year we fielded a side in the Diamond Valley League, and we were travelling to Doncaster and Ringwood, so playing away games in Footscray and Newport is much more attractive for families,” Mr Letts said.
“Baseball Victoria have been really supportive of the idea, and we’re hoping to have an under-13 and under-15 league up and running by the end of the month.”
Sunshine is holding a come-and-try day at its field on March 18 from 2-4pm for any new players interested in joining a side.
“We’re very much a minor sport in winter, with all the football codes to compete with, so we encourage anyone to come down and give it a try,” Mr Letts said.
“We’ll have a lot of drills set up, and a radar gun down there, and we’ll finish with a game so it’s a chance to try all the parts of the game.”
