Woolworths’ Taylors Lakes store kick-started the company’s green movement by ditching single-use plastic bags last week.
Taylors Lakes is one of three Victorian stores, the others being Toorak and Wyndham Vale, to partake in the new policy, which will be in place company-wide by June 20 this year.
Woolworths Taylors Lakes store manager Andrew Thorne said the move had been met with a positive reaction from customers.
“We started communicating to customers in early February, so it’s been a long build-up,” Mr Thorne said. “It’s been positive in terms of customer feedback. We’ve had a few question it, but it’s all about educating people on why we’re doing this.”
While all stores will remove single-use plastic bags on June 20, Mr Thorne said he jumped at the chance to pioneer the initiative.
“To be one of three stores in Victoria to pilot this before the full national launch is incredibly exciting,” he said. “The company asked for volunteers from three different tiers of stores. I think I replied back to the email in about five minutes and we were lucky enough to be one of the stores chosen.
“It aligns with my personal values and the values we’re trying to instill here at the store. The staff have really supported the move, which has been a joy to see.”
Reusable bags will be available for in-store purchase, with prices ranging from 15 cents to $3.
