Australian Navy to visit Sunshine

The Royal Australian Navy will be visiting the Sunshine Heights Cricket Club on March 22 to play in a special T20 cricket match.

The community is invited to attend the match which will feature presentations from Navy representatives, Brimbank councillors and Cricket Australia officers as well as action on the cricket field.

The T20 match is set to feature Perth Scorchers Big Bash leg spinner Peter Hatzoglou, who played all his juniors at the club.

Australian Navy support project officer Nick Magafas, who is also a member of Sunshine Heights Cricket Club, said it was great to be able to promote the Navy in diverse communities.

Mr Magafas also said it was a great opportunity for the Navy to engage with new cultures and grow its workforce closer to 20,000 people.

It is the second time the Navy will be visiting Sunshine Heights Cricket Club for a T20 match, following the inaugural event in December 2019.

Lieutenant Commander Ian Napthali said the event provided a great opportunity for the Navy to act on its aims to recruit from diverse backgrounds.

“It’s a great opportunity for the Navy to reach out to a non-traditional audience for us,” Mr Napthali said.

“With the new shipbuilding program, we’re trying to grow the Navy, make it bigger and we can’t keep recruiting from the same sort of population pool that we have been so it’s a great opportunity because we can reach out to people we don’t normally recruit from.

“And they bring a lot of diversity and a different flavor to the navy that will actually make the navy more effective to achieve our mission which is to defend Australia at sea.”
