Landmark arts project lifts off the ground

Brimbank council has secured three major partners to commission a $100,000 artwork for Sunshine’s town centre.

Work to construct a sculpture, Man lifting cow – one of three works in a series by multi- award-winning artist John Kelly – was given the go-ahead at a project launch in Sunshine last Tuesday.

Brimbank’s administration chairman John Watson thanked principal partners Sotheby’s Australia, the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and Sunshine Marketplace for backing the “landmark arts project”.

Mr Watson said the work was being made for the council at a “significantly subsidised cost”.

“This contribution by John Kelly to his home town is truly extraordinary and will be a permanent legacy to his family’s ties in the area.

“This major artwork would not have been possible without significant grants, donations and other financial assistance, as well as the in-kind contributions.”

Mr Watson said the project partners recognised that

Man lifting cow would give Sunshine an international profile while also inspiring other local artists.

“Great art has the power to encourage further access to the arts, contribute to economic development, boost social capital, enrich communities and revitalise civic pride in the heart of Melbourne’s growing west,” he said.
