Art erases personal doubts

A pilot arts program at Sunshine’s headspace may start at other centres if it proves a success.

Local artist Saidin Salkic is guiding parents and carers of headspace clients through the wonderful world of art.

headspace is a national youth mental health foundation providing early intervention services to 12-25 year olds.

It’s the first time headspace has run such a program, with an exhibition of its clients’ artworks slated for June 20 at the Visy Cares Hub.

Salkic said most clients at first were sceptical of their ability to make art and achieve the personal satisfaction at the end of the process.

“That has dramatically changed. Now, those who were the great sceptics of themselves are coming up with some brilliant work.”
