Arsonist charged for Brimbank fires

An alleged serial arsonist has been charged with lighting four fires in Brimbank in less than a week.

A police spokeswoman said a 40-year-old Attwood man had been charged with four counts of intentionally causing bushfires.

He was also charged with four counts of reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

She said the alleged incidents took place in Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West, and Grassland Crescent, Cairnlea, between January 9 and 14.

MFB firefighters were called to a six hectare blaze in Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West, shortly before 8pm on January 14.

As they battled the six-hectare fire, which sent smoke billowing over the Western Ring Road, they were called to another fire nearby in Federation Walk, Cairnlea.

The man was arrested on January 16 after police patrolling The Avenue in Sunshine West noticed a suspicious car with false plates parked in the street.

The Attwood man got out of the car and walked a short distance before he was stopped by police and subsequently arrested.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date.
