Brimbank Central shopping centre management and Brimbank council will work to stamp out illegal parking.
St Albans resident John Kruger has repeatedly called for action at the Deer Park shopping centre.
He says disabled parking spots at the rear of the centre are being used by “unthinking, arrogant shoppers” without disabled parking permits.
He also called on Brimbank council parking inspectors to regularly inspect the carpark.
“It’s constantly being used as parking spaces by unthinking, arrogant shoppers with no thought for others,” he said.
He said drivers were routinely blocking a clearly defined zebra walkway running next to the disabled bays.
“Pedestrians are forced to walk, nervously, along the roadway, facing the danger of moving vehicles,” he said.
He said council parking inspectors could “end up with writer’s cramp, filling out the tickets for these arrogant, think-only-of-themselves shoppers”.
A Brimbank shopping centre spokesman last week said fixed bollards would soon be installed on pedestrian crossings in the carpark.
“Brimbank council has also been notified of these changes,” he said.
Brimbank city development director Stuart Menzies said the council would make improvements to parking signage in the area.
“Council officers will continue to regularly patrol the area and will pay particular attention to the disabled parking bays at the centre,” he said.
“In the past four months, council has issued over 200 infringements to vehicles illegally parked in disabled parking bays around the municipality.”
Illegal parking can be reported to the council on 9249 4000.
