The cause of an Ardeer house fire that left a teenager with serious burns and caused about $200,000 of damage is being investigated.

Nearby residents called emergency services to a fire in Blanche Street near Mother of God primary school about 5.15pm on Monday, April 17.

MFB commander Guy McCrorie said firefighters arrived to find a young male lying unconscious on the nature strip.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to the Alfred hospital in a serious condition.

By late last week, his condition had been downgraded to “stable”.

Mr McCrorie said it appeared the fire had started in a front bedroom.

“His room and the hallway were completely gutted,” he said. “The fire got into the roof cavity and spread. Flames were protruding out the windows.”

It took 22 firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

Firefighters were forced to take additional safety precautions due to fears of asbestos in the building.

Mr McCrorie said the damage bill was estimated to be about $200,000. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

He urged people to check they had a working smoke alarm.

“It’s most important they’re tested regularly,” he said.

A nearby resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, has opened up her home to two men who had been living in the house until they are able to find new accommodation.
