Two Hillside Arcare aged care residents are in the running to win this year’s Arcare art greeting card competition.

Maureen Lauer, 80, and Lorraine Manger, 87, both use painting as their medium, with participants in other facilities taking on photographing, sketching, watercolour and craft projects.

Ms Lauer has been painting for the last 60 years and is deeply inspired by nature in her artwork.

“When I am painting, I am tranquil; it is a form of meditation for me,” she said.

“I’m thrilled to enter into the competition as I feel a part of something bigger than me.”

Ms Manger is also inspired by nature and said she used to colour as a child but only took up a painting club later in life.

“I joined as a hobby in my later years to pass the time and meet people, I never believed I was any good or had any talent,” Ms Manger said.

“To me they’re just my pictures so it’s surprising to me that so many people admire them.”

Running for three years in a row the competition is open to 47 aged care residences across three states.

Only four winners will be selected and their art will be professionally printed for the annual Arcare christmas and all occasion greeting cards.

Arcare aged care chief executive Colin Singh said the art competition aims to bring a sense of accomplishment and excitement to residents.

“The talent and creativity we have seen this year continues to be amazing and

we look forward to seeing who the public votes for this year,” Mr Singh said.
