A very wet court case

Keilor Tennis Club’s courts looked more like swimming pools after heavy rain last week.

Heavy downpours across a number of days left the club’s four courts ankle deep in water.

Club president Lisa Mayoh said the drainage at the club was inadequate and in need of replacing.

“We’ve been asking the council to do something about the drainage for three to four years,” she said. “Each time we have heavy rain, it gets worse and worse.

“The water was ankle deep [last week] and took a good couple of days to disappear,” Ms Mayoh said.

She said once the flood had drained away it left a black slime across the courts, forcing the club to purchase sand to soak it up.

Finals matches scheduled to be played at the club on Wednesday and Thursday last week had to be cancelled because of the damage.

“The clubrooms were also saturated,”
Ms Mayoh said. “We put a drier in for the carpet, but it absolutely stunk afterwards.

“We’re going to have to put a claim in for new carpet, but how can we do that with the drainage the way it is? We’ll be putting in a claim each time it rains.

“We had our club champion awards and not one person was in the clubrooms.”

Ms Mayoh said that while heavy rain fell only a few times a year, it was an inconvenience the club shouldn’t have to deal with.

“This has been an issue for as long as I’ve been president here,” she said.

“The council keep telling us they’re looking at things, but we just want it fixed.”
