A deep passion for social service

William Kelly, manager of Gateway Community Services, expects lots of growth and changes in the disability and aged-care sectors in coming years.

But for now, he and his dynamic team focus on their main purpose – one agreed upon from the beginning.

“Gateway exists to improve the health and wellbeing of people in our community,” William says.

“We promote social inclusion, and offer healthy lifestyle and educational
programs directed towards meeting diverse needs.

“I believe Gateway genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives every day. Our programs truly enrich and empower our members, helping them maintain independence, reduce social isolation and improve physical and mental health.”

Gateway began in 1994 as a volunteer-based organisation and grew quickly by meeting grassroots community needs.

It went on to gain some government funding, which enabled the eventual widening of the organisation’s reach across Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham.

Volunteers remain the lifeblood of Gateway and William says they’re looking for more, with numerous exciting volunteer roles currently available. William encourages anyone who is interested in finding out more about the volunteer roles to contact coordinator of volunteers, Fatima, on 9399 3511.

“We have a wonderful team of both paid staff and volunteers that work closely together to deliver amazing programs,” William says.

“They’re skilled, engaged and share a passion for community health and wellbeing.”

Gateway is also hoping to raise

$30,000-plus through an Emergency Food Relief fundraising Dinner at Yarraville Club on the evening of Friday, May 5.

What programs and services does Gateway have in addition to the important field of food relief?

It provides disability services, a support for carers program and community transport, and runs fantastic social and lifestyle activities each weekday.

Organised, and very affordable, outings are centred around fun, food and friendships.

Gateway Community Services, 43 Paxton Street, South Kingsville. Opens 8.30am-5pm Monday-Friday. Inquiries: 9399 3511 or
