UPDATE: A Delahey resident had a lucky escape after fire engulfed a home in Rye Court on Thursday.
Fire crews were called to the single-storey brick veneer home about 4.45am when neighbours saw flames. Five fire trucks and 17 firefighters, from both the MFB and CFA, attended what CFA spokesman Gerard Scholten described as a reasonably significant fire.
Mr Scholten said the fire caused the roof of the house to collapse but did not spread to neighbouring properties.
The lone resident managed to escape without injury and the fire was brought under control at 5.20am.
In the wake of three house fires which struck Brimbank last week, Mr Scholten said this fire was a timely reminder to people about the importance of adequate fire safety measures and having smoke alarms in homes.
“People forget we lose more lives to home fires than bushfires,’’ Mr Scholten said.
“In the colder months especially we see spikes in house fires.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
