Caroline Springs kindergarten site to be sold

Melton council will sell the Wirrigirri kindergarten site in Caroline Springs.

The council bought a portable building in 2002 for the site at 2 Darebin Place, Caroline Springs, to accommodate the growing number of three and four-year-olds in Caroline Springs and Burnside.

But a report presented at last week’s council meeting recommended ending enrolments at Wirrigirri and “at the same time, dispose of the facility and the land via a sale process at the end of the 2015 kindergarten year”.

The report states that the council always proposed for the sale of 2 Darebin Place and the ending of enrolments following completion of the Burnside Children’s and Community Centre, which is expected to be ready for the 2016 school year.

Melton council community services general manager Maurie Heaney said the council had consulted with the current provider at Wirrigirri kindergarten, TRY Children’s Services, about relocating to the new Burnside centre next year.

She said the new centre would “ provide an additional service over and above the capacity of Wirrigirri, featuring four kindergarten rooms compared with Wirrigirri’s one”.

The centre is about two kilometres from 2 Darebin Place. The closest kindergarten to Wirrigirri – Brookside Pre-School – is 500 metres away.
