While it looks cosy enough for youngsters to drive, the wingless sprint car that a Sydenham-Hillside Primary School teacher will race later this month is far from child-friendly.
Some time from February 19 to 21, physical education teacher Robert Lake will take to the track at the Australian wingless sprint racing championship in Adelaide where he will clock speeds of more than 100km/h.
Although the car has no boot, windscreen or roof, and just one seat, the maintenance bill still climbs after most races.
“We’ve been racing since October in a build-up to this race and every week we’re busy setting up the car and doing maintenance work,” the Melton resident says.
“It’s nerve-racking and exciting being out on the track with other cars. We had our first rollover at the Avalon track a few weeks ago, which was not a very nice experience, but we’re hoping to break into the top 20 in the titles.”
Wingless sprint cars are now the second- most-popular form of motorsport in Australia, and Mr Lake is hoping he and his five-man crew can recruit more members.
“The state title is being held in March in Nyora and we’d love a few sponsors to come onboard and help out in any way possible.”
