A teenage girl is showing the first signs of recovery after being seriously injured in a hit and run in Delahey last week.
Jasmine Vuong and her friend Anthony Nguyen, both 17, were mowed down by an SUV while crossing the intersection of Taylors and Braeswood roads in Delahey about 11.30pm on January 27.
Anthony, who suffered severe head injuries, died in the intensive care unit at the Royal Melbourne Hospital the next day.
Jasmine remains in intensive care at the same hospital, although her condition has improved.
“Her condition has been downgraded from critical to serious,” a hospital spokeswoman said.
Jasmine, who has undergone surgery for a fractured skull, is also nursing multiple broken bones, including a broken arm and a broken hip.
The two teens had just stepped onto the road crossing on a green pedestrian signal, when a car allegedly ran a red light.
Police determined that the pieces of the headlight recovered at the scene belonged to a light-coloured Nissan Dualis SUV, manufactured between October 2007 and January 2010.
A car matching that description was found at the Hillside house of a 33-year-old man on Thursday.
The man was arrested, but later released without charge.
“The man was released … pending further forensic examination of a vehicle and other forensic testing,” police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
